    Computational Steering of Cluster Formation in Brownian Suspensions

    We simulate cluster formation of model colloidal particles interacting via DLVO (Derjaguin, Landau, Vervey, Overbeek) potentials. The interaction potentials can be related to experimental conditions, defined by the pH-value, the salt concentration and the volume fraction of solid particles suspended in water. The system shows different structural properties for different conditions, including cluster formation, a glass-like repulsive structure, or a liquid suspension. Since many simulations are needed to explore the whole parameter space, when investigating the properties of the suspension depending on the experimental conditions, we have developed a steering approach to control a running simulation and to detect interesting transitions from one region in the configuration space to another.     Computer Simulation of Particle Suspensions

    Particle suspensions are ubiquitous in our daily life, but are not well understood due to their complexity. During the last twenty years, various simulation methods have been developed in order to model these systems. Due to varying properties of the solved particles and the solvents, one has to choose the simulation method properly in order to use the available compute resources most effectively with resolving the system as well as needed. Various techniques for the simulation of particle suspensions have been implemented at the Institute for Computational Physics allowing us to study the properties of clay-like systems, where Brownian motion is important, more macroscopic particles like glass spheres or fibers solved in liquids, or even the pneumatic transport of powders in pipes.     Comparing the MCMC Efficiency of JAGS and Stan for the Multi-Level Intercept-Only Model in the Covariance- and Mean-Based and Classic Parametrization

    Bayesian MCMC is a widely used model estimation technique, and software from the BUGS family, such as JAGS, have been popular for over two decades. Recently, Stan entered the market with promises of higher efficiency fueled by advanced and more sophisticated algorithms. With this study, we want to contribute empirical results to the discussion about the sampling efficiency of JAGS and Stan. We conducted three simulation studies in which we varied the number of warmup iterations, the prior informativeness, and sample sizes and employed the multi-level intercept-only model in the covariance- and mean-based and in the classic parametrization. The target outcome was MCMC efficiency measured as effective sample size per second (ESS/s). Based on our specific (and limited) study setup, we found that (1) MCMC efficiency is much higher for the covariance- and mean-based parametrization than for the classic parametrization, (2) Stan clearly outperforms JAGS when the covariance- and mean-based parametrization is used, and that (3) JAGS clearly outperforms Stan when the classic parametrization is used.Peer Reviewe

    "Learning Science Is About Facts and Language Learning Is About Being Discursive"-An Empirical Investigation of Students' Disciplinary Beliefs in the Context of Argumentation

    Argumentation is considered crucial in numerous disciplines in schools and universities because it constitutes an important proficiency in peoples' daily and professional lives. However, it is unclear whether argumentation is understood and practiced in comparable ways across disciplines. This study consequently examined empirically how students perceive argumentation in science and (first) language lessons. Specifically, we investigated students' beliefs about the relevance of discourse and the role of facts. Data from 3,258 high school students from 85 German secondary schools were analyzed with multigroup multilevel structural equation modeling in order to disentangle whether or not differences in argumentation across disciplines exist and the extent to which variation in students' beliefs can be explained by gender and school track. Results showed that students perceived the role of facts as highly relevant for science lessons, whereas discursive characteristics were considered significantly less important. In turn, discourse played a central role in language lessons, which was believed to require less knowledge of facts. These differences were independent of students' gender. In contrast, school track predicted the differences in beliefs significantly. Our findings lend evidence on the existence of disciplinary school cultures in argumentation that may be the result of differences in teachers' school-track-specific classroom practice and education. Implications in terms of a teacher's role in establishing norms for scientific argumentation as well as the impact of students' beliefs on their learning outcomes are discussed

    Agglomeration and filtration of colloidal suspensions with DVLO interactions in simulation and experiment

    Cake filtration is a widely used solid-liquid separation process. However, the high flow resistance of the nanoporous filter cake lowers the efficiency of the process significantly. The structure and thus the permeability of the filter cakes depend on the compressive load acting on the particles, the particles size, and the agglomeration of the particles. The latter is determined by the particle charge and the ionic strength of the suspension, as described by the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. In this paper, we propose a combined stochastic rotation dynamics (SRD) and molecular dynamics (MD) methodology to simulate the cake formation. The simulations give further insight into the dependency of the filter cakes' structure on the agglomeration of the particles, which cannot be accessed experimentally. The permeability, as investigated with lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulations of flow through the discretized cake, depends on the particle size and porosity, and thus on the agglomeration of the particles. Our results agree qualitatively with experimental data obtained from colloidal boehmite suspensions.Comment: revised version, 30 pages, 11 figures, 62 reference

    Follow-up of a suspected excess of brain tumours among Namibian children

    The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaTo the Editor: The aim of this follow-up study was to further investigate a suggested excess of childhood brain tumours (CBT) among Herero children in Namibia from 1983 to 1988. Incidence rates of primary brain tumours among Herero children were found to be 4 times higher than rates among Namibian children in any of the 10 other tribal groups or among children of European origin. The causes of CBTs remain largely unknown. The only established causes are ionizing radiation and predisposing inherited syndromes. A particularly compelling hypothesis is that exposure during gestation to N-nitroso compounds (NOCs) may lead to the development of CBT. This hypothesis was suggested by experimental work in which 100% production of nervous system (NS) tumours in rat offspring resulted from transplacental exposure to the neurocarcinogen ethylnitrosourea (ENU) or to low levels of the precursor compounds sodium nitrite and ethyl urea added to the food and drinking water of pregnant rat

    Exploring the Structure and Interrelations of Time-Stable Psychological Resilience, Psychological Vulnerability, and Social Cohesion

    The current study explores the relationship between three constructs of high relevance in the context of adversities which have, however, not yet been systematically linked on the level of psychological dispositions: psychological vulnerability, psychological resilience, and social cohesion. Based on previous theoretical and empirical frameworks, a collection of trait questionnaires was assessed in a Berlin sample of 3,522 subjects between 18 and 65 years of age. Using a confirmatory factor analytical approach, we found no support for a simple three-factor structure. Results from exploratory structural analyses suggest that instead of psychological resilience and psychological vulnerability constituting two separate factors, respective indicators load on one bipolar latent factor. Interestingly, some psychological resilience indicators contributed to an additional specific latent factor, which may be interpreted as adaptive capacities, that is, abilities to adapt to changes or adjust to consequences of adversities. Furthermore, instead of evidence for one single social cohesion factor on the psychological level, indicators of perceived social support and loneliness formed another specific factor of social belonging, while indicators of prosocial competencies were found to form yet another distinct factor, which was positively associated to the other social factors, adaptive capacities and social belonging. Our results suggest that social cohesion is composed of different independent psychological components, such as trust, social belonging, and social skills. Furthermore, our findings highlight the importance of social capacities and belonging for psychological resilience and suggest that decreasing loneliness and increasing social skills should therefore represent a valuable intervention strategy to foster adaptive capacities.Peer Reviewe
